Bespoke Waterproof Garden Storage Boxes in Bath
When our clients moved into their new-build property in Bath, they had two unused spaces on either side of their outdoor steps. They wanted to turn these areas into practical garden storage for items such as their barbecue, outdoor cushions and other garden equipment.
The challenge was not simply creating storage that fitted the space. Their neighbours already had similar timber storage, but unfortunately water was getting inside. Keeping the contents dry was therefore one of the clients’ main concerns from the very beginning.
We designed the entire construction with this in mind.
Designed Around Water Protection
Rather than placing the storage boxes directly on the ground, both structures were raised on treated timber posts.
This keeps the timber structure away from direct contact with the ground, reducing exposure to ground moisture and helping to improve the long-term durability of the build.
A weed barrier was also installed directly beneath the structures to prevent unwanted growth underneath the raised storage and keep the area clean and low-maintenance.
The raised platforms were constructed using a decking-style framework, providing a strong and stable foundation for each storage box.
For the floors themselves, we used pressure-treated timber decking boards. This provides a robust surface capable of handling the weight of garden equipment while also being a durable choice for an outdoor structure.
Pressure-Treated Timber Construction
The entire structure was built using pressure-treated timber, selected for its suitability for outdoor use.
The walls were finished using tongue and groove timber cladding. This creates a close-fitting wall construction designed to minimise opportunities for rainwater to enter while giving the storage boxes a clean, traditional timber appearance.
For the roof, we used a solid timber roof structure finished with roofing felt. The additional felt layer provides an extra barrier against rain and helps protect the storage area from water ingress.
Every part of the construction was considered with the same goal: creating practical outdoor storage that could cope with the British weather.
Practical Double Doors
The storage boxes were fitted with wide double doors without a central dividing section.
This was an important detail for the clients, as it makes it much easier to store and remove larger items such as a barbecue, garden equipment and outdoor furniture cushions.
Rather than designing the doors simply around appearance, we designed them around how the storage would actually be used.
Made to Measure for the Existing Space
Both storage boxes were individually made to fit the available spaces beside the steps.
Each unit provides approximately:
- 2m wide
- 1m high
- 800mm deep
This allowed the clients to make use of space that would otherwise have remained largely unused, without taking additional room from the main garden.
The relatively low height also allowed the storage to sit naturally beneath and alongside the existing steps rather than dominating the garden.
Finished to Complement the Garden
Once construction was complete, both storage boxes were painted grey using an exterior wood coating with additional protective properties.
The colour was chosen to complement the surrounding garden and allow the new timber structures to blend naturally into the property rather than standing out as separate additions.
The finished result is two practical, discreet storage solutions that make use of previously wasted space while adding useful storage capacity to the garden.
Built to Keep the Contents Dry
Water protection was the client’s biggest concern, so it was also one of ours.
From raising the structure above ground level, to using pressure-treated decking for the floor, tongue and groove cladding for the walls and a felt-covered timber roof, the construction was designed with moisture protection at every stage.
After completion, the clients confirmed that both storage boxes were completely waterproof and successfully kept the contents dry.
